Can I apply for a Georgian bank account without a residence permit?

Practical guidance for international readers · Georgia

A Georgian residence permit is not a universal prerequisite for applying for a bank account. Banks can serve non-residents, but the documents, onboarding route and approval depend on the bank and your individual checks.

What this means in practice

What the bank’s published process says

TBC’s current expat banking page says an applicant can visit a branch with an international passport and phone number; the page describes instant account opening for that process. TBC also directs applicants to visit a branch and present the passport. Its non-resident registration page is an application route, not by itself proof that an account has been approved. Other banks may use different requirements.

Before travelling, ask the bank whether your residence status, citizenship, tax residence, intended account use or source of funds changes the checklist. Bring the original passport if the bank’s process requires an in-person check. If the account is for an individual business, say so and confirm that the account product can receive the business payments you expect. Do not rely on a personal-account offer as confirmation that a business account will be opened on identical terms.

Keep the information consistent

Give the bank your actual country of residence and residential address, not the registered address of a Georgian business if you do not live there. Residence-permit status, tax residence and business address are distinct facts, even if a form asks about all three. Prepare a clear description of your activity and documents supporting the expected source of funds; the bank may request more evidence after reviewing your application.

Approval remains a bank decision. Opening an account does not extend your permitted stay in Georgia or authorise work that needs a separate right to work. For business use, compare the account’s permitted transactions and fees with your needs; see whether a separate account is required for your individual business.
