Do I need a passport translation to register as an individual entrepreneur in Georgia?
Practical guidance for international readers · Georgia
There is no safe one-size-fits-all answer for every passport and filing method. Applying in person with your original passport is different from submitting a translated power of attorney through a representative. Confirm the exact document set with the Public Registry before paying for translations.
What this means in practice
If you apply in person
Bring the original passport and ask the receiving office whether it can accept the identity details as presented or requires a Georgian translation. The Public Registry’s published business-registration FAQ does not set out a universal passport-translation rule for every foreign applicant, so a general claim that all passports must—or never need to—be translated would go beyond that guidance. Confirm the requirement for your passport’s language, format and the office handling your application.
If a representative files for you
The representative must prove authority in a form accepted by the Registry. Its FAQ says the power of attorney must be notarised or executed in accordance with Georgia’s law on electronic documents and electronic trust services. A document issued abroad may also need translation, certification or legalisation depending on where and how it was made. Ask the Registry or the receiving notary about the complete package before signing: translating the passport alone does not fix a defect in the authorisation.
Send the Registry the passport’s issuing country and language, whether you will attend personally, and—if using a representative—the draft power of attorney and its place of issue. Request confirmation about translation, notarisation and any legalisation separately. The Public Registry’s business-registration FAQ explains the representative-authority rule, while the service-centre information helps identify where to confirm an in-person filing.
If the Registry confirms a translation is needed, use the format it specifies and make sure names and passport numbers match exactly. Keep the written response or appointment notes with your application papers in case the filing is reviewed by another officer.
